Community Ministries
"The
purpose of our congregation, its mission, is to serve the people of the community."
-The United Methodist Member's Handbook
Safeplace (a shelter for battered spouses and their children), Meals on Wheels, The Help Center (a local mission for needy in the Shoals area supported by area churches) and the Garden Program (a self-help program which helps low-income families grow their own food) are a few of the worthy organizations the members of First United Methodist Church assist. In addition, First United Methodist Church is active in the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, a ministry dedicated to identifying community families without adequate housing facilities and working through volunteer efforts to build new basic housing or renovate existing housing.
Adult Ministries
Through
an array of Christian programs, activities and support groups, First United Methodist
Church reaches adults of all ages. Men's and women's weekly Bible study groups, family
outings, senior adult fellowship groups, as well as 12 adult Sunday
School classes, each tailored to address specific needs and stations in life, are all
available for participation.
Our nursing home ministry, homebound ministry, and audio and video
tape ministry are designed to reach members who are physically unable to attend church
services. Van transportation is available for Sunday worship services, and the van
shoppers program provides a weekly shopping outing for those needing transportation.
Adults dealing with crisis in their lives can find comfort and support
through the grief recovery support group, separation and divorce support group and the
caregivers support group.
College Ministries
The students at the University of North Alabama are a very important part of our community. Meeting their spiritual needs, particularly at this crucial time in their lives, is of our utmost concern. First United Methodist Church maintains and active presence on the University of North Alabama campus through strong involvement in The Wesley Foundation and through various college oriented activities scheduled throughout the year.
Children's Ministries
First United Methodist
Church's dedicated Christian workers concentrate on your child's spiritual and
intellectual education. Sunday School classes are available for toddlers through sixth
graders. A nursery is provided for all church services for children age five and under.
First through sixth grade children are encouraged to be part of our "Super
Kids" program. These groups meet one Sunday night each month to participate in
special programs and trips geared toward the younger child's Christian development.
Lambs of God is a very special ministry devoted to mentally
handicapped children and their families.
Annual Vacation Bible School week and trips to Camp
Sumatanga are other programs available for further enrichment.
